reNEW ARTxSCIENCE competition winner 2024
In celebration of Stem Cell Awareness Day, we announced the winner of the reNEW ARTxSCIENCE on October 9th. Congratulations to Charlotte De Henau from the Karine Raymond lab, reNEW Leiden, Netherlands for winning this year’s reNEW ARTxSCIENCE competition.
The international jury agreed that:
“The winning submission really connected science to art in the image while also being extremely eye catching and beautiful with a very impactful and clearly communicated story that people can understand and relate to. The winner has great potential to raise awareness about stem cells and demonstrate how stem cell research can impact and transform the lives of people”

Every stem cell photo in the competition is generated by dedicated scientists in the reNEW laboratories, showcasing their discoveries. Attached to each photo is a story on what the focus of the research is, how it contributes to advancing scientific knowledge or addresses a specific medical need, and how far the research is with the goal of ultimately impacting clinical therapies.

Bern Hall
Science Gallery Melbourne
Bern is a Lead Mediator and Learning Facilitator at the Science Gallery Melbourne. Her impressive background spans neuroscience, physiology, visual art, and graphic design and she’s passionate about improving accessibility and engagement in science through design. A self-described visual nerd, Bern likes to dive into the details, and is constantly inspired by the amazing people she meets through her work at the Science Gallery.

Dr. Insoo Hyun
Museum of Science Boston
Insoo is based at Harvard Medical school, where he’s the Director of Research Ethics, a faculty member of the Center for Bioethics, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. He’s also the inaugural Director of the Center for Life Sciences and Public Learning at the Museum of Science, Boston. Since 2005, Insoo has been heavily involved in the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) where he helped draft its international research guidelines and is the current Chair of the ISSCR Ethics Committee.

Christel Schollaardt
Museum Boerhaave
Christel is the Collections and Science Manager at Museum Boerhaave, the national museum of the history of science and medicine in Leiden. She has a wealth of experience managing extensive museum collections in the Netherlands, including the outstanding collection at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden.

Martin Ridderstråle
Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, MD, PhD, MBA, Professor
Head of Medical Science, one of the Foundation’s Programme Areas, and it’s three departments BioMedicine, Clinical Medicine, and Cardiovascular Medicine, and member of the Executive Leadership Team.
Martin is in charge of the Novo Nordisk Foundation activities relating to open calls within the medical sciences and strategic initiatives such as the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, the Danish National Genome Center, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease, the Novo Nordisk Foundation reNEW Center for Stem Cell Medicine, the Novo Nordisk Foundation Cellerator, the seven Steno Diabetes Centers in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, the Danish Diabetes and Endocrine Academy, and the Danish Cardiovascular Academy.
