The Creation of Vessels

Blood vessels are crucial for tissue repair and regeneration as they provide tissues with oxygen and nutrients. Our research aims to develop strategies to boost blood vessel function. ‘Organ on chip’ is a technology that allows growing small pieces of (kidney) tissue in the laboratory. We engineered a sprouting assay that allows us to study functionality of blood vessels in a 3-dimensional (3D) way.

Impact

By using advanced models to simulate and study blood vessel behavior in a controlled, 3D environment, we gain unique insights into vascular function. These blood vessels can next be combined with kidney-like structures (also called organoids) from the lab. Improved knowledge of these blood vessels can lead to more effective treatment and improve kidney transplantation outcomes.

reNEW research

We have demonstrated that transplantation of kidney organoids is important for blood vessel ingrowth. This subsequently leads to further development and functionality: the structures start to filtrate. Our 3D vessel-on-chip model allows us to fully understand the mechanisms of blood vessel ingrowth in depth. This will assist in developing new therapies using kidney organoids.
