reNEW Melbourne Node Director Professor Enzo Porrello has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS).

The Academy is an interdisciplinary body comprising Australia’s most influential experts in health and medicine. Election to AAHMS is one of the highest honours in the field, recognising individuals who have made exceptional contributions to advancing knowledge, translating research into improved health outcomes, and mentoring the next generation of researchers and clinicians.

Academy President Professor Louise Baur AM PresAHMS said, “Our new Fellows are improving lives — from tackling global health challenges and pioneering new treatments, to shaping policy and advancing the frontiers of biomedical discovery.”

Professor Porrello has pioneered research into heart regeneration, uncovering the previously unrecognised regenerative potential of the newborn mammalian heart. His work using stem cells to create beating human heart muscle has transformed approaches to disease modelling and drug discovery.

“It is an incredible privilege to be a scientist and an honour to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy. I am incredibly grateful for this recognition, which would not have been possible without the support of my lab members, collaborators and mentors over the years,” said Porrello.
