EMBO Scientific Exchange Grant to advance endometriosis research

Congratulations to Kadi Lõhmussaar from reNEW Copenhagen, who received a Scientific Exchange Grant from EMBO. This grant supports international collaborations and enables transfer of expertise.

Kadi is working on developing organoid models of the human endometrium to study endometriosis. Endometriosis affects about 1 in 10 women worldwide and is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

For her 3-month exchange, she will travel to the Institute of Analytical Sciences (ISA) in Lyon, France. The institute has an excellent spatial multi-omics platform led by Professor Sophie Ayciriex where she will receive training in the technique and perform spatial proteomics analysis on endometriosis FFPE tissue sections for target validation.

The exchange is additionally facilitated by clinical collaboration with Dr. Henriette Svarre Nielsen from Hvidovre Hospital who provides access to their FFPE tissue biobank.

The goal is to combine targeted and untargeted spatial proteomics which will allow us to validate several targets previously identified in our organoid data at reNEW while also providing the opportunity to discover novel targets through the unbiased analysis of patient tissue.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to undertake an international research exchange at ISA in Lyon. This experience will enable me to acquire expertise in spatial proteomics, establish new international collaborations, and accelerate my project from target identification to target validation, ultimately advancing our understanding of endometriosis and contributing to the development of more effective therapeutic strategies for the millions of women affected by the disease.”
