Inflammed heart valves

Rheumatic heart disease causes irreversible damage to heart valves. This is a global healthcare problem affecting 33 million people that can lead to heart failure and premature death. Currently, there is no vaccine or medicine to treat patients with heart valve damage.

Body area Heart

Rheumatic heart disease is uniquely human specific which means that traditional animal models have limited relevance to study the disease and develop new medicine. We are using human stem cell-derived valve tissue to explore how damage occurs and therefore how we can better treat it.

reNEW research

We have spent the past 3 years creating heart valve tissue from stem cells. We have recently begun to use these tissues to study rheumatic heart disease.
