Skeletal muscle is responsible for all voluntary movements. You use them to breathe, eat, talk and move, playing a vital role in everyday activities and quality of life. Our research aims to understand what goes wrong in muscle disease and how to make muscle more resilient to disease.
reNEW research
In the Mills lab at reNEW Melbourne, we use stem cells to make bioengineered skeletal muscle. These mini muscles move and function like the muscles in your body, giving us the unique ability to measure strength and endurance. Using this approach, we generate thousands of mini muscles for cell biology, and disease modelling applications; with the aim of finding new therapies for muscle disorders.
