metabolism, thermogenesis and movement. Atrophy, decrease or loss of muscle mass, arises due to the dysregulation of the above during disease, muscle disuse or infliction of physical damage. Our research aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms during atrophy progression as well as recovery, from a spatial transcriptomic to cellular organisation level, possibly identifying key factors to countering the condition.
reNEW research
The Muscle Group in the Giejsen Lab, utilises an atrophy mouse model to recreate human atrophy physiology by inducing the condition through casting. The model tracks muscle physiology and molecular products during the atrophy stage (casting) and recovery phase (cast removal). Samples are analysed through Immunoflurorescent staining, TOMO Seq, Western Blot and single-molecule Fluorescent In-Situ Hybrisation (smFISH).
