ART x SCIENCE 2026 #1
Heads in the clouds

With the possibility to derive induced pluripotent stem cells from patients, organoids and in vitro differentiation strategies become promising approaches to establish personalized therapies for virtually any disease. However, cells in these systems compete for the resources, eventually generating unwanted clonal expansion events that can bias experimental outcomes and lead to wrong conclusions. Here, we aim to combine cellular barcoding, differentiation assays and sequencing read-outs to address this challenge.

reNEW research

The Alemany lab studies cell fate commitment in early development. We develop barcoding and sequencing tools to trace cellular lineages and signalling activity with single cell resolution. The Chuva de Sousa Lopes Lab establishes in vitro differentiation of pluripotent stem cells to gametes of both sexes to improve ferility. Both teams combine expertises to investigate developmental trajectories of cells during human embryogenesis.
